Varsity vs Grand Haven High School (1 - 3) Loss On a cold evening, the Warriors proved they were up to the task. Grand Haven came out strong, jumping to an early 2-0 lead and putting immediate pressure on WMC. Despite the deficit, the Warriors showed flashes of promise in the opening half, creating a handful of scoring opportunities that hinted at a potential shift in momentum. At halftime, WMC made key adjustments—and it showed. The Warriors returned to the field with renewed energy, sharper focus, and a greater sense of urgency. Their efforts paid off as they began to control more of the play and challenge Grand Haven’s defense more consistently. The breakthrough came when Eveline Derdowski found the back of the net off a well-placed corner kick by Ellie Riksen, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and igniting the Warriors’ sideline. The goal shifted momentum firmly in WMC’s favor as they continued to press forward. However, Grand Haven responded with another goal in the run of play, extending their lead to 3-1 and regaining control of the match. Defensively, Molly Visser and Sadie Menefee were incredible on the backline, anchoring the defense and battling throughout the night. In the midfield, Allie Buchner and Lainey Postema were equally impressive, controlling possession and helping drive the Warriors’ second-half push. After the match, Coach McFarland reflected on the challenge of the week. “We knew this week would be tough in terms of opponent. Holland Christian, Spring Lake, and Grand Haven all bring challenges for our young group. We’ve grown so much in a five-day span.” Despite the result, the Warriors showed resilience and growth, continuing to build chemistry and confidence against a strong stretch of competition.
