The WMC Boys Track and Field team rose to the occasion on Friday night, finishing tied for 6th place out of 17 teams at the Division 3 Regional meet at Montague High School. Athletes posted many PR performances and moved on to the MHSAA State Finals in 2 events. Highlighting the day were MHSAA State Finals qualifying performances by Anderson Leffring in Pole Vault and the 4x800 meter relay team of Owen Sytsema, Josiah Scholma, Micah Scholma and Reuben Anderson. Leffring took 2nd place in Pole Vault with a vault of 12' 6" and the relay team also took 2nd place with a 8:24.32. Any team or individual who finishes in 2nd place or higher at the Regional meet or hits a qualifying standard moves on to the State Finals. Leffring entered the meet seeded 2nd and maintained his standing by having no misses at early heights and clearing 12'6" which equaled his personal record and school record set a week ago. This will be his first appearance at the State Meet. In the 4x800 meter relay we knew it would be a very close race with 5 other teams to snag a top 2 spot in the meet and qualify for the MHSAA State Finals. The Warriors maintained position in 1st or 2nd place for the entire race and not only qualified based on their 2nd place finish but also ran a season best time by 10 seconds to qualify based on time as well. It is no small task for 4 athletes to run their best times all on the same day and these 4 runners did just that when it mattered the most! Anderson will be making his 3rd trip to the State Finals, each year in the 4x800 meter relay, while Sytsema and the Scholma brothers will participate for the first time. Other scoring or PR performances included: 4th Place - 4x400m relay, 3:38.17 (Owen Sytsema, Sam Hwang, Tyson Annema, Reuben Anderson) 5th Place- Reuben Anderson, 800m (2:02.78 PR), Tyson Annema 110m hurdles (17.36), Josiah Scholma, 3200m (10:27.53 PR) 6th Place- Tyson Annema, 300m hurdles (43.87) 7th Place - Owen Sytsema, 800m (2:03.62 PR) 8th Place- Sam Hwang 400m (54.35 PR), 4x200m relay, 1:38.86 (Carter Peggar, Sam Hwang, Anderson Leffring, Tyson Annema) PR - Juan DeJonge 400m (57.81) PR - Micah Scholma 1600m (5:04.83) PR - Nico Pinto 1600m (5:43.94) PR - Eli Morse 3200m (10:46.94) PR - Xavier Carney Shot Put (29’ 8”) The Girls Team was also able to end the season on a high note.
