5 members of the WMC Boys Track and Field team earned qualifying spots at the Division 3 MHSAA State Finals, held on Saturday at Kent City High School. The 4x800 meter relay team of Owen Sytsema, Josiah Scholma, Micah Scholma and Reuben Anderson finished in 16 place out of 31 teams with a time of 8:27.74, which is exactly where they were seeded going into the meet. Although not a season best time, this result remains impressive as it marks the 3rd time in as many weeks that this group has hit the state qualifying time after chasing it all season long. They took a huge step forward by running faster than the qualifying standard (10:30.0) 2 weeks ago at the regional meet and have performed at that new level ever since! It is extremely hard to have all 4 runners perform their best all on the same day and this group has done it multiple times this season. This state finals race was a very solid effort to cap off a season of tremendous growth and we look forward to a bright future in this event! Also competing for the Warriors was Anderson Leffring in the Pole Vault. Earlier this season, Leffring set the school record, with his best height of 12'6". On Saturday he cleared opening height, 12'0", on his first attempt. He then set a new school record and PR with success on his first attempt at 12'9". Anderson has worked hard in the off season to push himself and it paid off with a new PR at the biggest meet of the year. What a great way to end the season!
