NORTON SHORES, MI – Western Michigan Christian spent much of the first half patiently trying to solve Shelby’s packed-in defense Wednesday night. Once the Warriors found the key, the goals came quickly. The Division 4 No. 2-ranked Warriors scored five times in a 12-minute second-half barrage to finish off an 8-0 victory over the Shelby Tigers at Warrior Field. WMC improved to 7-0-2 on the season, while goalkeeper Kaden Peggar recorded his fifth shutout. The Warriors wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Just 2:30 into the match, Mason Bonnema delivered a cross from outside the left edge of the penalty area that worked its way through heavy traffic in the box. Braedon Hoffman met it first time and hammered a laser past the Shelby keeper for a 1-0 lead. From there, the Tigers settled into a disciplined low block that proved difficult for WMC to unlock. The Warriors continued to generate chances, however, and their persistence paid off midway through the opening half. Tyson Annema weaved his way into the penalty area and fired a shot that redirected toward Oliver DeJonge, who left no doubt with the finish to double the advantage. WMC struck again with eight minutes remaining before halftime. Annema collected a clearance following a Bonnema cross, maneuvered around two Shelby defenders and drove his finish high into the left corner to send the Warriors into the break with a 3-0 lead. The pressure intensified in the second half. With 31 minutes remaining, Bonnema drove a low cross in from the left flank and center back Seth Moorhead finished it for the first of five WMC goals during a devastating 12-minute stretch. Annema struck again moments later, heading home off a Carter Heimiller corner kick to make it 5-0. Heimiller then set up Hudson Fair, who delivered a perfectly placed strike from 22 yards out for the Warriors’ sixth goal. The senior wasn't finished creating chances. With 20:04 showing, Heimiller launched a free kick from roughly 45 yards out near the right sideline into the Shelby penalty area. DeJonge worked his way goal-side of his defender, rose to meet the service and volleyed it home from between the penalty spot and six-yard box. It was DeJonge’s second goal of the night and Heimiller’s third consecutive assist, pushing the Warriors’ advantage to 7-0. WMC needed only 39 more seconds to finish the job. Annema found Theo Buursma on the right wing, and Buursma beat his defender to the end line before driving a low cross through the penalty area. Carter MacKellar met the service and buried the final shot of the night, ending the match with 19:25 remaining. The final sequence was nearly a mirror image of WMC’s first goal of the second half — this time coming from the opposite flank — and capped a dominant second-half performance. The Warriors now turn their attention to another unbeaten opponent. WMC will host Holland on Thursday at Warrior Field. The Dutch enter the matchup 6-0-1 and ranked No. 13 in Division 2, while the Warriors put their 7-0-2 record and No. 2 Division 4 ranking on the line.
