The Warrior Cross Country teams took advantage of a nearly perfect morning and top notch competition to take a huge stop forward at the Pewamo-Westphalia Invitational on Saturday. This race caps off a week of huge improvement for both teams with 21 out of 24 athletes who raced running season best or personal record times either at the Johnson Park meet on Wedesday of the Pewamo-Westphalia meet today. At Pewamo-Westphalia, the Boys Team used strong pack running all through the ranks to finish in 3rd place in the Gold (mid-size school) division. Owen Sytsema speaheaded the effort with a 16:35 (1 second off his PR, 8th place). Running in a pack just off Sytsema's pace were Sam Hwang (16:56, 13th), Eli Morse (16:59, 15th), and Josiah Scholma (17:05, 16th), all with PR performances. The next pack to come through was Micah Scholma (17:45, 27th, PR), Ezra Scholma (18:29, 32nd, PR), and Jack Walter (19:31, 48th, huge season best/ near PR). The Girls Team was equally impressive, rising to a new level as this young group gains experience and knowledge from each race they run. Led by veteran Leah Sneller's long awaited PR of 19:41 and 7th place finish, the rest of the girls team worked through the field to finish in 4th place and earned some huge PRs in the process. Rochelle Liu (22:14), Kyla Zuidema (22:34), Lena Studer (22:45) and Martina Choliz (23:25) finished in scoring positions today with Annabelle Walter (23:26), and Sophia Gammon (23:39) rounding out the top 7 for WMC. The list of impressive performances could go on and on. Coaches are so proud of the work done and lessons learned today!
